Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022) Netflix | Movie Review

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (or simply Pinocchio) is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson (in his feature directorial debut) with a screenplay by del Toro and Matthew Robbins. It reimagines the story of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who comes to life as the son of his carver Geppetto, as "a story of love and disobedience as Pinocchio struggles to live up to his father's expectations, learning the true meaning of life" set in Fascist Italy during the interwar period and World War II. Based on the 1883 Italian novel

Plot: A father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child. However, the two of them have to struggle to find a place for themselves as Italy becomes embroiled in fascism.

The Good Aspects of the film:

The Direction:
The story of the movie is very simple yet the execution made it shine all thanks to Guillermo del Toro(director of the movie) . The first act of the movie developed the relationship of a father and son, showed us the daily life of Pinocchio's father and how he wanted to protect his son and it was all very engaging

Emotional Weight:

The first act of the movie builds up for a emotional rollercoaster that's incoming. While the movie take emotions serious for the most part of it but there's actually a good balance between seriousness and fun. The movie highlights the happiness, the sadness, the grief and the importance of Love in one's life yet still not by being boring. This movie made me feel the loss that Geppetto(Pinocchio's father) had felt. The movie manages to make you cry, feel excited about it and most importantly make everything enjoyable and engaging.
The Stop-Motion Animation:
One of the most positive thing about this movie and what makes it stands out is that it is made using Stop-Motion Animation using action figures and props. It means that makers of the movie had to make sure that each and every shot looks the best because of the hard work they had put into it. You can't do a lot of reshoots, so every shot is considered final take. The environment and the characters feel alive.
The music:
We can't talk about this movie without talking about its music. It's a musical fantasy and I gotta tell you this movie delivers when it comes to music and background score. Alexandre Desplat has done a great job. The music actually contributes greatly to the film and manages to create the required vibe/feeling.

The Bad aspects of the film:
The pacing:
One thing people might be concerned about is the pacing of the film. It isn't necessarily a bad thing about the movie but rather a personal take. I find the movie to be a bit long at some point in the movie but it's what I think. So it might not be the issue to you.

Final Verdict/Ratings:
Its a must watch movie: 4/5
